Failure-Transparent Agents: Benchmarking Post-Failure Reporting in Tool-Using Language Models
The technique replaces free-form agent responses after a tool failure with a structured output contract requiring the agent to cite the evidence (or its absence) justifying any success claim. It costs only a prompt-level change plus constrained-output enforcement, with no extra model calls, training, or infrastructure, though results derive from a controlled benchmark rather than live environments. It can fail when tasks are not truly blocked and the contract forces overly rigid reporting, when models satisfy the schema superficially without grounding claims in actual observations, and when gains measured on 100 deterministic tasks do not transfer to dynamic production settings.
