ApexQuant replaces calibration-data-dependent post-training quantizers with a calibration-free residual re-quantization scheme that stacks scalar, E8, or trellis stages so one artifact serves multiple bit-widths. It costs extra passes of encoding and decoding (latency and storage of multiple residual codes per layer), adds implementation complexity on top of an existing quantizer, and trades a small quality gap versus full precision. It can fail if the isotropization theory does not hold for particular layer distributions, if the two-bit quality still proves insufficient for the reader's downstream tasks, or if inference frameworks lack fast kernels for the multi-stage codebooks, negating the memory savings in practice.

For solo builders

A possible application for this research area. Paper-specific feasibility still needs a full-paper review.

A self-hosted assistant is too expensive because its model uses most of the GPU memory.

What you would change

Try the paper's supported lower-precision weights on a copy of your serving setup.

Try the idea on your product

A proposed first test. Set your budget and success criteria before running it.

Try the paper's supported lower-precision weights on a copy of your serving setup.

Compare against

The same model at its original precision, on the same GPU.

  1. Locate the paper's implementation and check its license, model support, data needs, and hardware requirements. Stop here if you cannot obtain the required artifacts.
  2. Save a small set of representative product tasks and expected outcomes. Keep evaluation tasks out of any training or tuning, and choose quality and cost limits before running.
  3. Run the baseline and the proposed change on identical inputs. Keep other settings fixed and repeat paired runs to expose variation.
  4. Save per-task outputs, failures, timings, and all usage costs. Review regressions before expanding the test.

What to measure

Peak memory, task pass rate, latency, and total serving cost at the same context and load.

When to keep it

Keep the change only if it meets your preselected quality and latency limits and improves the metric you care about after setup and operating costs. Otherwise retain the baseline. This is an exploration plan, not a validated recommendation.

Data-free residual re-quantization for LLM compression
published
2026-10-06

A data-free quantizer producing 4-bit and 2-bit LLM checkpoints fits a single 24 GB GPU and a no-calibration-data setting directly, but the gains are workload- and kernel-dependent and therefore require validation on the reader's own models before production adoption.

About the technical core

Within a few percent of full precision at four bits and the best two-bit result measured, in a fully data-free setting; 'few percent' is not a multiplicative factor, so no factor is recorded.
