It replaces full agent benchmark runs with a small exact-size miniset selected by jointly modeling outcome and process (trajectory) relations, from which full-benchmark scores are predicted. The cost is collecting and featurizing large-scale historical trajectories across agents, training the relational predictor, and maintaining six process signals per task. It can fail when applied to benchmarks or agents outside the training distribution, when process signals are unavailable or unlogged, and when rank-preservation degrades for novel capability regimes.

For solo builders

A possible application for this research area. Paper-specific feasibility still needs a full-paper review.

An agent looks good in demos, but you cannot tell which product tasks it fails.

What you would change

Use the study's evaluation idea to inspect a small set of tasks with human-checked answers.

Try the idea on your product

A proposed first test. Set your budget and success criteria before running it.

Compare against

Your current evaluator and a manually reviewed reference set.

  1. Locate the paper's implementation and check its license, model support, data needs, and hardware requirements. Stop here if you cannot obtain the required artifacts.
  2. Save a small set of representative product tasks and expected outcomes. Keep evaluation tasks out of any training or tuning, and choose quality and cost limits before running.
  3. Run the baseline and the proposed change on identical inputs. Keep other settings fixed and repeat paired runs to expose variation.
  4. Save per-task outputs, failures, timings, and all usage costs. Review regressions before expanding the test.

What to measure

Agreement with human review, missed failures, false alarms, and evaluation cost per task.

When to keep it

Keep the change only if it meets your preselected quality and latency limits and improves the metric you care about after setup and operating costs. Otherwise retain the baseline. This is an exploration plan, not a validated recommendation.

It directly cuts agent evaluation cost on a single-GPU or API budget, but adopting it requires existing trajectory data and validation against the reader's own benchmarks before it can be trusted for production model comparisons. Why it fits: the method is an evaluation efficiency technique rather than a model optimization, so the reader with limited infrastructure benefits only if the compression transfers to their workloads, which warrants a test-before-adopt stance.

With 20 tasks it achieves 24x-40x compression on APEX-Agents and BFCL, reducing MAE by 14.5%-28.2% versus the strongest baseline and improving Kendall's tau by up to 7.2% on SWE-bench Verified.
