For solo builders
A possible application for this research area. Paper-specific feasibility still needs a full-paper review.
Long customer conversations exhaust memory or limit concurrent requests.
What you would change
Change only the attention cache policy, after checking model and runtime support.

Compare against
The same model with its ordinary attention cache.
- Locate the paper's implementation and check its license, model support, data needs, and hardware requirements. Stop here if you cannot obtain the required artifacts.
- Save a small set of representative product tasks and expected outcomes. Keep evaluation tasks out of any training or tuning, and choose quality and cost limits before running.
- Run the baseline and the proposed change on identical inputs. Keep other settings fixed and repeat paired runs to expose variation.
- Save per-task outputs, failures, timings, and all usage costs. Review regressions before expanding the test.
What to measure
Peak cache memory, long-context answer quality, first-token latency, and requests completed.
When to keep it
Keep the change only if it meets your preselected quality and latency limits and improves the metric you care about after setup and operating costs. Otherwise retain the baseline. This is an exploration plan, not a validated recommendation.

- Mixed-precision KV cache quantization above the quality cliff

KV cache memory is a direct constraint on a 24 GB GPU and the method requires only inference-time changes on an off-the-shelf model, but the quality cliff must be re-measured for the reader's specific model and workload before the 6x claim can be relied on.
About the technical core
The technical core is an algorithm, not an equation.
When reading the methods, identify the rule, algorithm, or evaluation protocol that produces the claimed change. An equation is useful here only if it explains that mechanism.

Read the brief interpretation
SemKV replaces uniform low-bit KV cache quantization and FP16 token pruning with full token retention plus two adjacent above-cliff precisions assigned by a model-internal importance score. The cost is a per-deployment calibration step to locate the quality cliff, mixed-precision packing and dequantization logic in the inference path, and storage overhead for scores and per-token precision assignments, all inference-time with no retraining. It can fail if the cliff shifts under a different model, quantizer, or serving regime (generation-time quantization, multi-turn dialogue), since the reported thresholds were validated on Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct and Mistral-7B, and the no-loss claim is statistical rather than a guarantee of per-example equivalence.

Inspect the source - claim 02Paperraft inference
Measured 6.0x KV cache storage reduction with no statistically detectable quality difference from full FP16 KV (n=900, three seeds), rising to 7.9x when the affine quantizer is replaced by TurboQuant-MSE.

Which tokens or cache entries are retained, compressed, or discarded? Look for tests of lost information.
Plan a fair comparison
Can you keep prompts and decoding settings fixed while measuring cache size, latency, and answer quality?
